What
started out as a "grocery-getter" 8v economy hatch, this 18 year
old car is in the process of a receiving
a few "minor" upgrades. Starting with a 1.8L 8v motor
barely pushing 90hp at the crank, the first upgrade was the block.
By swapping in a late-model Jetta 2.0L ABA block (along with a few other
bolt-ons) power was pushed up to 105whp (approx. 125 at the crank) -
making it able to keep up quite nicely with the more expensive sporty 16v
models. But of course that wasn't enough. We decided to
upgrade the head first, moving to the intended cross-flow head for the
2.0L. Much more similar in design to the 16v heads, the cross-flow allows
for more airflow and efficiency than its older counter-flow
counterpart. In a similar fashion the Motronic engine management was
brought over from the Jetta and was installed. And then came the
cool guy stuff:
